Harvest Announces Groove-Heavy Thursday Night Party

It’s going to be an epic party Thursday, September 14th in the Moose Light Blues Tent as today Harvest announced the addition of Lettuce, The Revivalists and The Marcus King Band as one massive show to the 27th edition of Harvest in Fredericton, NB this September. These artists join previously announced headliners Colin James and Steve Earle & the Dukes, with the rest of the line-up will be released on May 11th, the same day tickets go on sale.

“Putting a show together like this for our audiences is so much fun because it’s really as well curated as any major festival show in North America this summer” said Brent Staeben, the Festival’s Programming Director. “We know the Revivalists can deliver and we’re so damned pleased to be introducing both Lettuce and the Marcus King Band to Harvest. Lettuce is a powerful band known for its incredible live shows and they’ve been on our radar for the past few years, while Marcus is a young superstar-in-the-making. Each act will play a full show and altogether in one night we can guarantee some faces will be melted.”

For more than two decades, the seven-piece Brooklyn-based juggernaut Lettuce has brought a new vitality to classic funk, matching their smooth and soulful grooves with a hip-hop-inspired urgency and mastery of beat.  That sense of unity and togetherness has much to do with a camaraderie that’s only intensified over the lifespan of the band. Formed in 1992, when several band members attended a summer program at Boston’s Berklee College of Music as teenagers, Lettuce was founded on a shared love of legendary funk artists like Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower of Power. Lettuce started playing in local clubs and steadily watched their fan base expand world-wide as they’ve hit bigger and bigger stages and earned their name as a can’t-miss festival act.

The Revivalists return after an incredible year that has seen them reach of the top of the charts and build new audiences all over America.  The single “Wish I Knew You” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs Chart in September 2016 and they ended the year at #3 on the charts for SiriusXM’s The Spectrum. But what’s been truly amazing is the enduring popularity of the album Men Amongst Mountains which continues to find new audiences amongst a growing group of younger fans also drawn to the manic energy and unbridled musical vitality of their sold-out live shows.  When a band is already on top and yet still growing, and we can fit them into a show like this one, we knew we wanted another sweet taste of the Revivalists.

Barely 21, South Carolina’s Marcus King is poised to be one of music’s next great guitarists — a virtuosic talent capable of playing blues, rock, R&B, country, soul and more.  The young singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader is a protégé of musician, producer, and collaborator Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks.  Haynes says of King, “Marcus is the first player I’ve heard since Derek Trucks to play with the maturity of a musician well beyond his age. He’s very much influenced by the blues, but also by jazz, rock, soul music, and any timeless genres of music. You can hear the influences, but it all comes through him in his own unique way.”  King’s six-piece rock and soul outfit solidified its current, horn-enhanced lineup about a year ago, and today are touring and playing festivals from coast to coast.

The Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival is Atlantic Canada’s largest annual music festival, drawing up to 85,000 fans to the streets of Fredericton each September.  The 27th annual edition of the festival this year runs September 12-17.

Curtis Salgado’s prolific career began during the late 1960’s while performing with Oregon based band the Nighthawks. During a 1977 gig in Eugene, Oregon, Salgado met comedian and actor, John Belushi, who was in town filming National Lampoon’s Animal House. The two hit it off immediately and Salgado’s raucous performance style would later be credited as the inspiration for Belushi’s legendary Blues Brothers character Jakes Blues.

After the Nighthawks splintered, Salgado joined forces with The Robert Cray Band, singing on Cray’s debut album in 1980 and touring with the band for six years on vocals and harp. Salgado also front Roomful of Blues throughout the mid 80’s before forming his own band Curtis Salgado & the Stilettos and releasing their debut, self-titled album in 1991. The group was invited to tour in support of the Steve Miller Band the same year. During a brief sabbatical from his own band, Salgado toured as lead vocalist for the American-Latin rock group Santana in 1995. Since 1995 Salgado has released 8 records, kept and extremely busy touring schedule, battled and beat cancer – twice, and was the recipient of three Blues Music Awards in 2013, including: B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year and Soul Blues Album of the Year. Salgado is completing an extensive tour in 2017 in support of his latest release The Beautiful Lowdown. The soulful live show is not to be missed and is sure to help you shake off those harsh winter blues.

Harvest Jazz & Blues Free Music Programming & ANBL Safe Ride

Every year Harvest offers a plethora of free musical performances on stages located throughout the festival footprint. Once again the festival will present 4 free stages in downtown Fredericton within the Taylor Printing Street Experience along with a free ANBL Safe Ride program to get patrons to and from the festival safely.

“High quality, free programming is part of Harvest’s DNA,” says to Mike Comeau, chair of the Festival. “We are committed to making Harvest accessible to everyone in our community, whether you’re eight or eighty.  Part of that is tickets starting at prices as low as $10. But free concerts are huge. They’ve been a part of the Harvest tradition for 26 years now.”

Each free stage will present its own distinctive offerings.

On Wednesday and Thursday of the Festival, the King’s Place Stage will present free lunch time shows at 12pm featuring Maggie’s Farm Revival and Matchstick Mike & The Chain Smoking Altar Boys.

The Fredericton’s Own Stage, in front of City Hall, will feature the best of Fredericton’s up and coming talent at 6:45pm Friday and Saturday of the Festival. Friday night will feature performances by David in the Dark, Property, and Varas, and on Saturday night Heat and Lights, Tokyo Valentine, and Rosewood Groove will take the stage.

The Siemens Acoustic Stage on Queen Street will offer patrons an unplugged experience on Friday night with LeeBoy and Shrimp Daddy and on Saturday night with LeeBoy, Keith Hallett and Brent Mason.

Harvest’s Stingray Rising Star showcase will take place Friday afternoon at the Stingray Barracks tent. This free event will feature performances by the four finalists. At the end of the showcase, the 2016 Stingray Rising Star will be selected. The 2016 Stingray Rising Star will then open for Stephen Lewis & After Funk later that evening in the Barracks. Saturday’s free concert moves over to the Stingray Barracks Tent this year for some Lawnchair Blues starting at 2pm and featuring Steve Marriner, Ross Neilsen and Mark Green.

On Saturday, the Congo Square family experience will begin at 11am with kid-friendly performances by Scotty & the Stars, Blues in the Schools Musician & Clinician Samuel James, and MarchFourth!.

The Daily Gleaner Stage in Officers’ Square will close the festival on Sunday starting at 1pm with performances by Brandon Niederauer “Taz”, STU Jazz and MarchFourth!.

In addition, Festival goers will find performance buskers, food and artisan vendors, and a crafts fair located throughout the Taylor Printing Street Experience.

In addition to the free stages, Harvest also offers a free concert in one of its main venues. This year, Fredericton’s Hypochondriacs play the Moose Light Blues Tent on Wednesday at 6:30pm.

Once again in partnership with ANBL the festival will offer a free safe ride programming. The ANBL Safe Ride runs Thursday-Saturday of the Festival, with stops at most major Fredericton hotels as well as several businesses at key pick up and drop off locations throughout neighbourhoods on both sides of the river. The buses bring Festival-goers downtown, right at the heart of the Festival grounds.

“This is about convenience for our patrons, but also about easing congestion downtown during the Festival. The more people who take advantage of the ANBL Safe Ride program, the better the whole traffic situation will be downtown,” said Comeau.

“Alcool NB Liquor is very proud to be a partner in such a great festival and give back to the community with a free ride to and from concert venues around Fredericton” says Brian Harriman President & CEO of ANBL.  “Supporting people in making smart choices about responsible use of alcohol is something we are very passionate about at ANBL.”

There are four routes on the free ANBL Safe Ride—two that focus on South Side hotels and businesses with buses running every 30 minutes, a bus that runs direct from the Delta Hotel to downtown every 20 minutes, and a North Side Route, with stops at the Devon ANBL, the Brookside Mall ANBL, and the Main Street Superstore running every 30 minutes.
